Walter F. Emerson, beloved husband, father, grandfather and
great-grandfather
LEICESTER, Mass. — Walter F. Emerson, 95, formerly of Eldred, Pa.,
died peacefully Thursday (Jan. 29, 2015) at home with family in
Leicester.
Walter was born on Aug. 13, 1919, in Eldred.
He graduated from Eldred High School in 1937. He served in the U.S.
Army during World War II in the European Theater from April 1942 to
August 1945. He was attached to Allied Headquarters in a commando unit
and was stationed in Ireland, Scotland, North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
He was a technical sergeant and earned several medals and citations,
including the Purple Heart.
After returning from the war, he married Dorothy Drabant in 1946 and
began working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1954, he joined
Wirthmore Feeds Company in Olean, N.Y., and held positions of traffic
manager, assistant plant manager and treasurer until being promoted and
transferred to the company's headquarters in Waltham in 1967.
He was an active member of the Eldred community, serving on the Eldred
Township Board and Otto-Eldred Board of Education for more than 15
years. He was an active member of the St. Raphael's Catholic Parish, the
Eldred Rotary and the Olean City Club. From 1967 until his retirement in
1981, he worked for Wirthmore Feeds and Agway Inc. as a plant manager in
Brattleboro, Vt., and Binghamton, N.Y.
Upon his retirement, Walter and Dorothy moved to Monroe, N.C., where
they enjoyed years of many lasting friendships and community
involvement. In recent years, they moved to Leicester to be closer to
family.
Walter is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children and their
spouses, Thomas (Mary Ann) Emerson of Rochester, N.Y., Deborah (James)
Dalton of Leicester, and James (Joan) Emerson of Biddeford, Maine; eight
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Walter was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Violet Emerson; his
younger siblings, Ronald, Richard, Philip (Stanley), Juanita Gross and
Kenneth; and his granddaughter, Ann.
Friends and family may call for visitation from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Monday at Frame Funeral Home, Eldred. A Mass of Christian burial will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 3, 2015) at St. Raphael's Catholic
Church, with the Rev. Thomas Brown as celebrant. All are welcome. Burial
will follow at St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport, with full military
honors being presented by the Smethport American Legion Bucktail Post
138 Memorial Team. A Christian Scriptural wake service will be held at
3:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
