ELDRED — Arlene Curtin Spencer of Eden Heights, formerly of Fullerton Road, Derrick City, passed away at the age of 91 on Feb. 10, 2021, at Harris Hill Nursing Facility, Williamsville, N.Y., following an extended illness.
Arlene was born on May 2, 1929, the daughter of Hervey and Esther Washburn. She was a 1946 graduate of Otto Township High School, Duke Center. On Oct. 29, 1946, she married Donald Dale Curtin who preceded her in death on April 21, 1992 after almost 46 years of marriage. She subsequently married Charles Spencer on May 12, 1994, who predeceased her on Jan. 7, 2009.
Over the years, Arlene was very busy with her large growing family as well as employment at various places including Dresser Clark, Olean, N.Y., American Monument, Olean, N.Y., for William O’Reilly, Olean City Attorney and lastly at Witco Chemical, Bradford until her retirement in 1992.
She was active in the Duke Center E.U.B. church and then at Duke Center United Methodist Church, Bradford Christian Women’s Club and Duke Center Red Hats. She was an excellent seamstress and an avid crafter either sewing clothing for the family or making home decorations for those she loved. Arlene was a Western Style Square Dancer and along with her husband Don, a square dance caller, started and participated at several clubs such as Belles & Beaus, Eldred, Chautauqua Squares, Jamestown, N.Y., and Belles of St. Marys.
Arlene loved reading, hymns, classic country tunes, Johnny Mathis and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. Don and Arlene made several trips across the United States along with their children and Arlene continued her travelling adventures with some of her daughters as the opportunities presented themselves. She was a great collector of tea cups, chickens and roosters, Santas and snowmen as well as old glassware and shopped garage sales and flea markets to pick up items of old furniture to refinish. Arlene had a green thumb when it came to flowers. Every year there was her beautiful flower bed along the driveway admired by all who visited or passed by.
Gatherings with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were one of the big delights of her life. Surviving are eight children: Susan (Arnold) Brunner, Patricia (Jack) Hipple, Becky (Mike) Decker, Randy (Linda) Curtin, Lisa (Al) Brazzle, Robert Curtin, Kathy Curtin and Richard (Kristine) Curtin.
