Thelma Spehar
ELDRED — Thelma Crowley Spehar, 91, of Edson Street, went to be with the lord on Wednesday (Nov. 4, 2015) in her home surrounded by her family.
Born Feb. 10, 1924, in Port Allegany, she was a daughter of William and Olive Splain Crowley. On June 6, 1945, in St. Bernard Catholic Church in Bradford, she married Anthony W. “Tony” Spehar, who passed away on Sept. 7, 1995.
Thelma was a 1941 graduate of Eldred High School.
She was a lifetime resident of Eldred. Early in life, Mrs. Spehar was a telephone operator in Eldred and Smethport, and she was one of the first dial operators in Pennsylvania. Later, she was employed as a bookkeeper at Westons Shopper City; she then worked at Viko Furniture in Eldred for several years, before retiring from Jaguar Clothing Manufacturing in Smethport.
Thelma was a lifetime member of St. Raphael Church in Eldred and its Altar Rosary Society, as well as a former treasurer. She was also a member of the Eldred Red Hat Ladies.
Her number one enjoyment in life was her family and her dog “Gizmo.” She also enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles and gardening, as well as spending time with her friends, socializing and traveling.
She took immense pride in her Irish heritage. When asked what the most beautiful thing she ever saw was she said, "Today."
Surviving is one son, Greg A. (Pamela) Spehar of Olean, N.Y.; one daughter, Kathy (Chuck) Frame of Oak Hill, Va.; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Anthony “Tony” Spehar; son, Mark Spehar; grandson, Brett Spehar; parents, William and Olive Crowley; three brothers, Howard Crowley, William Crowley and Steven Crowley; two sisters, Mary (Crowley) Eaton and Madeline (Crowley) Nenno; niece, Evelyn (Eaton) Butler and Geraldine (Eaton) Kutney.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Frame Funeral Home in Eldred. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Raphael Church in Eldred with the Rev. Thomas E. Brown as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sartwell.
