SHERRY E. HOUSLER
CLARKS MILLS, Pa. – Sherry Eileen Housler, of Clarks Mills, Pa., and formerly of Eldred, Pa., died Monday (April 7, 2014) at her home.
Born Nov. 1, 1936, in Olean, N.Y., she was the daughter of Clifton A. and Beryl Whittemore Howell. On Aug. 12, 1962, she married Max C. Housler.
Mrs. Housler was a 1954 graduate of Eldred High School. She was a trained vocalist who had her own local Olean radio program in the 1950s. She served as choir director of the Eldred United Methodist Church for a number of years as well as providing special music for churches and clubs.
Beginning in 1972, Mrs. Housler and her husband became foster parents for McKean County. They provided love, nourishment and hope to over 100 children. Mrs. Housler worked hard to instill confidence and dignity in each child.
Mrs. Housler attended Jamestown Community College- Olean, majoring in social work. From there, she became the director of the Bradford YWCA women’s homeless shelter.
Surviving are four children, Lisa (James) Kayes of Olean, N.Y., Gay (Rev. Dayton) Mix of Clarks Mills, Pa., Teresa (Harry McCaslin) Hosick of Meadville, Pa., and James C.E. (JoReneé) Housler of Eldred; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and one brother, H. Fred (Kathryn) Howell of Olean, N.Y.
She was predeceased by her husband on Nov. 27, 1997, and an infant son, Kristopher Housler, in 1964.
Friends will be received on Thursday (April 10, 2014) from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Frame Funeral Home, 230 N. Main St., Eldred, and on Friday (April 11, 2014) from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Eldred United Methodist Church, 24 Main St., Eldred, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dayton D. Mix and the Rev. Rick Long, officiating.Burial will be in the Lamphier Cemetery, Eldred, Pa.
