Russell R. Freer, beloved family man

ELDRED, Pa. — Russell R. Freer, 75, of Slack Hollow, passed away
Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2015) in Eldred following a long illness.
Born Jan. 21, 1939, in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of Robert and Ardis
Russell Freer. On May 9, 1980, in Eldred, he married Roberta A.
Propster, who survives.
Russ was a 1956 graduate of Eldred High School and had resided at Slack
Hollow for the past 34 years.
He had served with the U.S. Navy as a machinist. After the military he
was employed, along with his father, at the Shields Lumber Co. in
Eldred. From 1959 until 1964, he worked at the Olean Tile Co. Until his
retirement in 2004, Russ was employed at the Pierce Glass Co., later
Saint Gobain, in Port Allegany as a machine operator.
He was a past member of the Eldred Fire Department. Russ was an avid
hunter and outdoorsman.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Robert (Eddy) Freer,
James (Donna) Freer and William (Allison Faulkner) Freer, all of Eldred,
and Todd (Cindy) Freer of Greenville, S.C.; three daughters, Barbara
(Jerry) Tanner of Eldred, Janet (Jeff) Shade of Bradford and Tina
(Chuck) Lunn of Greenville; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren;
one brother, Roger (Gerrie) Freer of Eldred; and one sister, Sandy
Sherman Graeff of Pittsburgh, Pa.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, James R. Sherman Jr., in
1979.
At the family’s request, there will be no visitation and a private
memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Online
