Norma M. Bowen loving mother and nana
Duke Center- Norma M. Bowen, 80, of Kansas Branch Rd., passed away Tuesday (July 30, 2013) in her home following a long illness.
Born December 3rd, 1932 in Prentisvale, she was a daughter of Andrew and Jeanette Rouse Powell.
Norma was a 1950 graduate of Otto High School; she later graduated from the Bradford Hospital School of Nursing in 1953 as a registered nurse. She was a lifetime resident of Duke Center and Prentisvale.
Mrs. Bowen was employed by the Olean Medical Group with Dr. Johnson for several years and later in the Labor and Delivery Department of the Olean General Hospital for 5 years. She then worked as a unit supervisor in of the OBGYN Department of the Olean Medical Group for many years retiring in 1994. After retirement she owned and operated the Amity Park Trailer Court in Belmont, NY until earlier this year.
Norma was a pianist and choir director at the Rixford Evangelical Church for many years. She was later the organist for the Eldred Free Methodist Church and the Sawyer Evangelical Church. She was an active contributor to the Humane Society of the United States and actively supported Child Care Ministries.
She was an avid NFL and NASCAR fan, as well as an avid flower gardener and lawn mower. Norma also volunteered many hours to the residents of Allegany County, NY serving as Ombudsman for several nursing homes and was a friendly visitor to the elderly. She was recognized for her work by being named volunteer of the year by the Office of the Ageing several times.
Surviving are 2 sons, Mark (Kelly) Sullivan of Duke Center and Michael (Val Nichols) Sullivan of Rixford; and 2 grandchildren, Daniel Sullivan and Mary Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Flora Powell in 1928 and Charlotte Calhoun in 2006. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Rev. Cecil Ross in 1995.
Friends may call Friday at the Frame Funeral Home in Eldred, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, and Saturday (August 3rd, 2013) at the Sawyer Evangelical Church in Bradford from 10 to 11 am, at which time funeral services will be held with the Rev. Brad Preston officiating. Burial will follow in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette, PA.
