James LeRoy “Roy” Owens Sr. , formerly of Coryville, 94, died Tuesday August 29th 2017 at the Charles Cole Memorial Hospital Coudersport, surrounded by his loving family.
Born August 17, 1923 in Kinzua he was a son of Allen L. and Bernice (Francis) Owens. On June 19, 1943 he married Augusta Gladys MacKenzie at Fort Bragg Army Base, North Carolina. They recently celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army during WWII having served most of his time in England. Roy and Gussie and their family resided in Coryville for most of their life. He had been employed by The Huey and Harvey Lumber Company of Eldred, Pitt Corning in Port Allegany and retired in 1985 from the Quaker State Refinery in Farmers Valley, after 25 years. He was formerly a member of the Coryville Church of Faith for many years.
Roy’s passion for cars and working on them was well known in the Coryville Area. He was a master mechanic and auto body man. He often watched NASCAR and enjoyed attending auto races. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and gardening. He taught himself to play several instruments including the guitar, mandolin, and the banjo.
Roy is survived by his wife Augusta, two children, James(Bonnie) Owens Jr. of Bradford, and Gail (Paul) Raymond of Smethport, a brother Arthur “Dutch” Owens of Bradford. Roy is also survived by eight grandchildren, Dave, Kelly, Jill, Jim, Jody, Barry, Justin, and Jonah, and twenty three great grand children.
In addition to his parents Roy was preceded in death by his son Bruce, a brother Billy, two sisters, Martha Bergschneider and Ruth Everett, and a granddaughter Julie Penird.
Friends may call on Saturday at the Coryville Church of Faith in Moody Hollow from 11:00 am until 1:00 p.m. at which time the funeral and committal services will be held with the Reverend Max Simms Officiating. Burial will follow in Moody Hollow Cemetery. The veteran’s flag will be presented by his grandson, Sgt. Jonah Raymond.
