SHALLOTTE, N.C. — Herbert W. Johnson, formerly of Eldred, Pa.
(Larabee), passed away peacefully at home on Monday (April 18, 2016) at
the age of 94.
He was born May 6, 1921, in Larabee, Pa., to John and Jennie Haynes
Johnson.
A longtime resident of the Eldred area, he attended Eldred High School.
After high school, he worked on the family farm and for the local
utility company. In March 1943, in Corvallis, Ore., he married Alice
Loretta Jenick of Olean, N.Y., who passed away in 1998.
In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with the 104th
Infantry Division, Artillery Headquarters Company, as a radioman and
fought in World War II in the European Theater, where he was promoted to
staff sergeant. He was involved in the Battle of the Dykes in Holland,
the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Mittelbau-Dora Nazi
concentration camp, better known as Nordhausen, amongst other
engagements. He returned to Eldred after World War II and was employed
at Daystrom Furniture in Olean, prior to moving to East Aurora, N.Y.,
where he worked for Moog Inc. as a machinist until his retirement. In
1986, after retiring, Herbert and Alice established residence in
Shallotte.
While in Eldred he was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Eldred.
Herbert’s family was first and foremost in his life. After his
retirement, he spent much of his time traveling to visit family, friends
and old army buddies. He also attended many of the 104th Infantry
Division reunions.
Surviving are a daughter, Loretta Robinson of Wilmington; and three
sons, Stephen and his wife, Karen, of Columbia, Conn., Jay and his wife,
Louise, of St Marys, Pa., and Eric and his wife, Clara, of Milan, N.Y.;
five grandchildren, Stephanie, Jamie, Carrie, Jessica and Mark; 10
great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He is also
survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Theodore and Roland Johnson;
and two sisters, Kathleen Johnson Raszman and Doris Johnson Hills.
Friends and family may call at 11 a.m. Saturday (July 16, 2016) at the
Frame Funeral Home, Eldred, for a memorial service with the Rev. Jay
Tennies officiating. All are invited to attend a gathering immediately
following the memorial service at the Eldred World War II Museum to
continue the celebration of Herbert’s life. Herbert’s ashes will be
buried at the family plot at Oak Hill Cemetery in Eldred at a later
time.
Military honors will be presented at the funeral home, honoring his
service in World War II.
He will be missed by family and friends, and in particular, by his
close companion of the last several years, Elmyra Dorn.
