Ernest Roy Hand Jr., 73 of Smethport, Pa, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday February 23rd, 2016. with his daughters surrounding him with love and support at the Lakeview Senior Living Center.

Born March 23rd, 1942 in Bradford, Pa, he was the son of Ernest Roy Hand Sr. and Eleanor Julia Hand  

Ernest grew up in Eldred and was a 1960 National Honor Society graduate of Otto-Eldred High School.  He earned his Bachelor's of Education from Clarion State University. He completed his Masters Degree of Education at SUNY Fredonia.

Ernest raised his family in Little Valley, NY.  Surviving are three daughters, Anne Marie Hand of Arizona; Michelle L. (Russell J.) Scaccia of Marrero, Louisiana; and Kathleen Dietz of Utica, NY.  Five grandchildren, Anthony Elias-Hand, Julia Russomano and Scott Russomano of Arizona. Tyler James Dietz and Jordan Roy Dietz of Utica.  Sister, Patricia L. (Howard) Nichols of Centerville, Pa and a brother, Earl “Budd” Hand of Eldred Pa.  Several nieces and nephews; as well as his dear friend Donna Miller of Hinsdale, NY.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Julia Marie Hand and his nephew, Budd Hand.

Mr. Hand was a social studies teacher at Little Valley Central School from 1967-1976. He then became a Labor Relations Specialist for New York State United Teachers and retired in 1999.  

Mr. Hand was a member of the Smethport Lions Club and past president. He was on the board of directors for the Mckean County Conservation District. A member of the Sons of the American Legion. He served as a director for the Seneca Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He also served on the Otto- Eldred Scholarship Committee and the Otto-Eldred Alumini Committee. He was also a member of the Ball & Chain Bradford dance club. He devoted decades of his own time, experience and talents towards these groups. He worked diligently to improve our environment with his conservation efforts. His desire to help and support his fellow man was his true passion in life.

Mr. Hand was a history buff, an avid reader, tenacious fisherman, traveler, and car enthusiast. He loved music, dancing and nature.  He and his loving friend Donna regularly attended dances and concerts.  They spent the last several years traveling from state to state visiting their children, grandchildren, relatives and many friends.

On Friday February 26, 2016 at 2:00pm, a memorial service in his honor  with a luncheon to follow will be held at the American Legion in Smethport, Pa.. Arrangements have been entrusted with Frame Funeral home in Eldred, PA.
