RIXFORD — Donald F. Baker, 93, of Looker Mountain Trail, passed away on Sunday (May 10, 2015) at his residence following a long illness.
Born on July 9, 1921, in Rixford, he was a son of Lee and Lillian Dolan Baker. On Jan. 21, 1945, in the Duke Center Evangelical United Brethren Church, he married Donnes J. Wright, who survives. On Jan. 21, 2015, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
He was 1946 graduate of Otto High School in Duke Center and was a lifetime resident of Rixford. Don was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army as a corporal. He had been employed in the local oil fields for the Messer Oil Co. for several years and was later employed by the Clark Brothers Manufacturing Co. in Olean, N.Y., as a machinist. For 23 years prior to his retirement in 1982, he was employed by Corning Glass Works in Bradford.
Don was a member since 1986 of the Sawyer Evangelical Church. For many years, he was active as a leader in the Boy Scouts serving as assistant scoutmaster and a Cub Scout leader and neighborhood commissioner. He enjoyed traveling with his family in their travel-trailer and later they enjoyed taking bus tours. His other hobbies were woodworking and hiking with his grandchildren.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Ila (Gene) Felt of Salamanca, N.Y., and Dr. Donna (Ken) Mettler, EDD, of Middleburg Center; three grandchildren, Angela (Mark) Ellis, Steve (Kellie) Felt and Mike (Debbie) Mettler and six great-grandchildren, Tim and Jeff Ellis, Alexandra and Dylan Felt and Tricia and Joshua Engle. Don is also survived by a brother, Richard (Genevieve) Baker of Austin, Texas; and two sisters, Geraldine Zetler of Rixford and Dorothy Kuhn of Bradford.
Friends may call at the Frame Funeral Home, Eldred, from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Sawyer Evangelical Church with the Rev. Jacob Cirigliano, pastor of the Faith Evangelical Church in Corry, officiating. Burial will follow in Little Valley (N.Y.) Rural Cemetery.
