David Hughes
ELDRED — David E. “Huey” Hughes, 68, of Wright Road, passed away on Monday (Sept. 20, 2021) at his home.
Born Feb. 20, 1953, in Pottstown, he was a son of Elmer David Hughes and Edna Mae Long Delophane. On July 7, 1989, in Elkton, Md., he married Joyce Ann Baker, who preceded him in death on May 11, 2019.
David was a 1971 graduate of Pottstown High School and later received his nursing credentials from Alfred University in 1994. He began his career as a truck driver and had been employed by Venezia Trucking, Swan Oil Co., Prime Inc. and US Express prior to going back to school later in life and becoming a licensed practical nurse, after which he had been employed at the Sena Kean Manor in Smethport and the Dickinson Center in addition to performing in-home health care up until his retirement.
Huey loved music and earlier in life he had been active with sound engineering for several different bands. He was also member of the Van Club. He was also a lifelong sports fan, especially all the Philadelphia teams in addition to enjoying NASCAR and Jimmy Johnson. In addition to playing sports in high school he also was a successful coach for the baseball and football teams of his children, leading their football team the Pottstown Patriots to three championships and the Type Set Printing Baseball Team to two championships.
Surviving are four children, David M. (Alison) Hughes of Smethport, Tamara Wilkinson fiancé of Jimmy Keim of Douglasville,, Tony Hurst of Clarksburg, W.Va., Larry Hurst of Eldred; and four grandchildren, Leland Hughes, Elijah Stuckey, Mia Wilkinson and Nina Wilkinson.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Hughes.
A celebration of life will be held at United Christian Church in East Smethport on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
