Dale C. Shields, beloved husband, father and grandfather

ELDRED, Pa. — Dale C. Shields, 82, of South Main St., passed away on
Sunday (Jan. 18, 2015) at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester
following a brief illness.
Born March 28, 1932, in Eldred, he was a son of Clifford and Nellie
Wright Shields. On June 18, 1956, in the Eldred Methodist Church he
married the former Norvelle A. Fischer, who survives.
Dale was a 1949 graduate of the Eldred High School and later graduated
from the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. Years later he
completed certification courses to meet the requirements to be eligible
to teach at BOCES.
He was a veteran of the Korean War having served as a corporal as a
company clerk in the U.S. Army. After college, he entered the family
business, the Shields Lumber Company, along with his father and his
brother, where he remained a co-owner until the business was sold in
1988. Later from 1991 to 1998 he was employed as a full-time instructor
in the Occupational Building at the BOCES on the Windfall Road in Olean.
After his retirement he continued as a substitute teacher at BOCES until
2010.
Dale is a member of the Eldred United Methodist Church, the Eldred
Borough Fire Department, a past member and past president of the Eldred
Borough Council for many years, and a member of the Eldred Chapter of
the International Order of Odd Fellows before it’s closing, a member
of the SHARKS radio controlled airplane club of Eldred. He was also a
social member of the Pulaski Club of Olean.
He loved gardening, lawn care and cutting firewood. In the past Dale
enjoyed being active as a ham radio operator, hunting and fishing.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are a son, Dana (Teresa) Shields of
Eldred; a daughter Carolyn (Lenny Suchora) Shields of Olean; two
grandchildren, Daniel (Abigail) Shields of Ringtown, Pa., and Kevin
Shields of Volant, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, George Shields in 2012.
Friends may call for visiting hours on Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2015) at the
Frame Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m., at which time the funeral service
will be held with the Rev. Ernie Perry, officiating. Burial will be in
the Lamphier Cemetery, Eldred, Pa.
The family wishes for memorials to be made to the Eldred Borough
Ambulance or the Fire Department.
