Smethport—Augusta Gladys “Gussie” Owens, 96, of Lakeview Nursing Home, passed away on Saturday (October 16th, 2021) in the care of Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport.
Born February 24th, 1925 in Keating Township, she was a daughter of Alonzo and Pearl MacKenzie. She married James LeRoy Owens Sr. on June 19th, 1943 in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Roy preceded Gussie in death on August 29th, 2017.
Gussie was a lifelong resident of the area and spent the majority of her life residing in Coryville. She graduated from Smethport High School in 1943. She was an active member of the Smethport High School Orchestra having played the violin, and later was a self-taught pianist.
At age 15, Gussie trained to be a Nurses Aid at the original Port Hospital. Following her father’s death, she ran his oil field business. She worked for Bell Telephone in Smethport for several years and the Corning Glass Works in Bradford for 20 years. Following her retirement from Corning, she was active in caring for the Elderly well into her seventies. She also ran a small floral shop out of her home with her good friend Charlotte Dean and made Memorial Day arrangements for several years.
Mrs. Owens was a member of the Coryville Church of Faith. She was active in a bowling league in Smethport for many years. Augusta enjoyed family most of all, particularly at holidays. She spent the last three years under the care of the staff at Lakeview Nursing Home where she was involved in many activities and and developed many deep bonds with the staff. Surviving is her daughter, Gail (Paul) Raymond of Smethport. A sister, Annie Green of Smethport and a brother Daniel MacKenzie of Eldred. Two daughters-in-law, Bonnie Silvis Owens and the former, Jean Morton. Eight grandchildren, David Owens, Kelly Erickson, Barry, Justin and Jonah Raymond. Jill James, Jimmy Owens and Jodie Murphy. Twenty great-grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren.
Augusta was preceded in death by her parents, her two sons Bruce Owens and James Owens Jr. A sister Julia Rose, a sister Donna Greenman, and a granddaughter Julie Penird.
A Private funeral service will be held due to the COVID protocols with the Rev. Max Simms. Burial will be in Moody Hollow Cemetery, Coryville. A public Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
