Smethport – William A. “Bill” Abbey, also known as “Papa”, 68 of East Valley Road, Smethport, passed away on Wednesday ( January 6, 2021) at UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Born on December 5th, 1952 in Olean, NY, he was the son of William and Olive Connor Abbey. On May 6th, 1972 in East Smethport he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Slade, who survives.
He had attended Smethport Area Schools. He was previously employed by Market Basket as a store manager, and later went on to retire and became a van driver for C.L. McKeirnan Bus Garage.
Bill was well loved by the community, and he had a passion for helping others, especially life-long friend, Henry Rinamon. Playing music on his guitar and singing were the loves of his life, as well as tending to his garden. Bill played in his band Country Pride for many years, but especially loved singing with his granddaughter Kayla and great granddaughter Brooke. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, bingo, and going to the Seneca Allegany Casino. Bill loved going to the Pump House every morning for his daily coffee and lottery tickets.
Surviving in addition to his wife is One son John Abbey (Jenny Studley) of Bradford; one daughter Deanna (Frank) Hudak of Smethport; One sister Donna (Larry) Schneller of Cyclone; Stepsister Linda Huntington of East Smethport; four grandchildren, Kayla (Donovan) Raymo, Kaitlyn Collins, Cameron Abbey, and Jacob Hudak. Four great grandchildren, Brooke Warnick, Braelynn Vossler, and Xavier and Lillyannah Abbey as well as many brother in laws, sister in laws and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be a Celebration of Life held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
